I’ve been continuing on the progress of my 31′ Foldlight with a battery ignition. I did receive this motor in many pieces, but I have (somewhat) successfully reassembled it. However, there are a few things. I am missing the button that goes on the end of the tiller, and the carb bracket to tank is a bit odd looking, not sure if it is original or a modificaiton.
Also, the bottom half of the shaft has a slight wiggle when uncouples, different from the later style folding motors. Is this normal?
I am also missing rings for both pistons, they are just attached. Not sure torque specs or how tight the bolts need to be on the con rods, I have figured out the correct orientation of the pistons.
Finally, I cannot seem to figure out where the coil sits under the flywheel, there is a small bracket that was in the box too.
Thank you,
Aidan

I have a solution for the coil if it is what I think it is…

classicomctools@gmail.comJuly 2, 2025 at 10:02 am #297852I have a few pictures of my 1931 on this lap top. Don’t know if they will be of much help to you. Only picture I have of the magneto is with the OMC style coil substitution. I won’t be home till mid-August to give you better shots. Just so you know when searching for parts the tiller mount is somewhat different on the 1930’s motors compared to the later motors.

July 2, 2025 at 11:41 am #297861I think he said he had battery ignition????…. so the coil “should” be external to the mag…

July 2, 2025 at 12:48 pm #297863Yes, I have the battery ignition. However, the coil sits somewhere on the motor to connect to the timer and plugs, I just cannot find where it would have been mounted. Would you have any recommendations for installing piston rings without breaking them?

This model never came with a battery ignition, however someone may have converted the motor to a homemade battery ignition as the coils have often failed in these.

July 2, 2025 at 1:36 pm #297866Tubs, my flywheel is not cut out for the mag, and the model number lines up with the 0ld service bulletins. On the attached, it shows the flywheel, and the page out of the bulletin showing “foldlight battery” for the 1931 year. My flywheel definitely is thinner than yours, if I could convert mine to the magneto, I would. Not sure where I would find a flywheel, coil, mag plate, or cam roller though.
