That would be a new motor to me. I’m sure you got the model # 404 from your motor. Can’t search your model # here. Your motor looks to have the same flywheel as the model 401. If that is factory I would think that is an uncommon motor. Don’t want to know the exact last 4 numbers but in the hundreds or thousands what are they?

July 4, 2025 at 5:44 am #297924In order to figure out what coil you need, you’ll have to provide some better images. Also your full and COMPLETE model-serial number, including all seven digits.
I’d suggest taking the flywheel off and providing a picture of the timer with it fully exposed to view, them take the timer off and provide a view of the front and top of the engine. Only then can we give you any real useful advice. As Tubs has mentioned, the flywheel has the same appearance as that used on many other Evinrude-Elto motors of 1931, including the model 401, 404, and 405, as well as the 413 and 414 from 1932, among others. I say ‘appearance” because there are variation of that flywheel, depending on type of timer used. The Atwater-Kent timer with the connecting rod uses one flywheel, the “Evinrude-Elto” timer without the dogbone connecting rod uses another.

Can also mean low production. If they don’t sell many the numbers can’t get very high. Too bad it came to you in pieces. I’m far from being a source for all the models that have been produced but, this is the first I have heard a of Foldlight having a battery ignition. T2 should be able to identify the timer. Looking at the model that has the same one may be helpful in discovering how your motor was assembled. This is very interesting to me.

July 7, 2025 at 3:26 am #297996You probably already know this, but the s/n indicates your motor is the 69th one built in the 404 series. so its fairly early in the model year.
That being said, I will tell you that I don’t know how many of the 404’s were sold. I have seen a few and just missed a chance to buy one several years ago at Constantine, that motor was in its original metal storage box, which is an accomplishment all by itself. Beyond that I can’t tell you how ‘rare” it might be. Lets just say they’re quite a bit less common than the flywheel magneto Foldlights.

July 9, 2025 at 9:10 am #298033T2, that’s good to know. However, the only real thing that I believe it needs to run is rings. It has a coil, I still have to figure out where that mounts on the casing. Would you know where I could order or find replacement rings? The pistons just did not have them on when I received the motor.
Thanks,
Aidan

Try Ed Elliott . If he can’t help try Dave at Otto Gas Engine Works. Links below

July 10, 2025 at 4:32 am #298050This motor would have a two inch bore and uses a 1/8″ wide ring, so Otto Gas engine works would likely be able to help. This particular ring fits a wide variety of engines so it shouldn’t be hard to find them. Otto Gas Engine will need to know the bore size, ring width, and ring groove depth in order to help you. I just gave you two out of three specs but you’ll have to measure the groove depth yourself.
