I should know this by now, but which coil is for the top cylinder, left or right?
Also, can I install sparky boots on the spark plug wires and have them fit under the lower cowling on a KE4, or do I need to stick with ring terminals?
I never remember which coil is which, either. Just put the mag on the motor with the lever dead center and turn the motor over, seeing which set of points open as which piston nears the top.
Great tip, Bill! I actually have a diagram up in my workshop for the OMC universal ignition, but not for the various Merc ignitions. My small brain just doesn’t have the capacity to remember that detail!
Dave- thanks for confirming the sparky boot fit under the cowlings.
Jason,
Good to hear from you. Yes any time you want to locate the correct wire just watch the two sets of points with a two cylinder motor & when one set starts to open stick a long screwdriver in both cylinders. The piston closest to the top gets that coil. I’m thinking it’s the left side with Merc but don’t go by my memory as you know where I’m at right now. It’s so draining!
Shorter spark plugs may be required to gain room.
I think that is story with prior KD/WD models with the spark plug covers.
probably the reason so many covers were removed and never put back on.

If I recall correctly a discussion on this subject the compact spark plugs are CJ’s
Jason,
I have a paperweight plug on my desk & it is a short design. It is an A.C. CS 45 if you can match to that model, hopefully. It was from a 3.6hp Firestone one cylinder about 1948 or so.
