So now that my ’49 Sea King is running pretty well, I’m in the market for a quality gas tank. I found one on ebay, but the seller is being a bit less than polite. Guess I said something wrong?

There are a couple of ’51 tanks that look pretty good, but this rookie has no idea of the nuances between years for the fuel tank. I’m looking to check compatibility since I would like to keep the motor looking as original as possible. I have the part# for my GG9014, so I’m looking for a parts guide for 50 and up (I have the one for the ’49 and below) for when I find one I will know if it is a good candidate.

      Other ideas and recommendations welcome!

Here’s the ebay ad. He says he’s willing to separate the items, but he has declined 2 offers (at full asking price) and won’t respond. He also jacked the total ask to $129 from original $79.

      https://www.ebay.com/itm/292430693143?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=Xv916lCxQHa&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=_qCRfRHATmq&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

If the other tanks (’51) won’t work and someone wants to help out, message me and we can discuss.

      Thx all!

      Best Regards,

The same thing happened to me with that seller.  He had an item listed with “Make Offer” as one of the buying choices.  I made him an offer (about 20% off) and he never replied and then he upped the asking price to about twice what he had been asking.  I have never had that happen before or after with any other  e-bay seller.

On the other hand….he has a lot of interesting stuff for sale and sometimes his prices are OK.  Just don’t take him up on his offer and “Make an Offer”!

AOMCI Member Richard Paquette  up in Canada has put together a variety of Eaton Viking Manuals  (Viking is the name that a lot of Gale (Sea King) motors were sold under in Canada at the Eaton’s Department store there).

Once you get familiar with the Gale-Sea King-Viking model numbers…..you can use the Viking manuals for your Sea Kings and other Gale Product Variants  (of which there were quite a few).

That’s good to hear, thank you. My story goes deeper than I put on paper, but at least I know it wasn’t something I did…kinda sad there are people out there who do these things…

Thanks for the info, I will take a look.

I never did hear from the local chapter. Do I remember correctly that they have a Sea King group?

The same tank is used on later models but different part numbers because of different colors and decals

Some E bayers are dishonest. I sold a Lionel model train transformer & the buyer said the cord was cut. It was new sealed in the original box. I wouldn’t buy that tank on e bay, wait for a better one. Look how corroded the inside of the tank is thru the filler spout!!I had an old Johnson square tank fixed, it was vatted & nickle plated. I had too much in it, get a good tank to start with!! Maybe Doug Penn might have one. He is on the web.maybe one with a cap too!

Thanks Jeff. Can these tanks ‘corrode’? As in rust out? They are aluminum so they shouldn’t be able to rust out, right?

If they can ‘corrode’, then that’s why he got mad at me. I wanted info on what I was seeing in the tank and all he would say was ‘see description’. After asking twice more, I submitted a full price offer of $29 and said ‘if it’s not in a condition that can be cleaned, I will return it.’. He changed the ad to say no returns on tank and jacked the price up.

                    If aluminum can rust, how?

                    Thank you!

In the right conditions, an aluminum tank will disintegrate just like a steel tank.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
