Hello. I just put my engine back together from a bunch of boxes I got from someone. Anyway what did I do wrong to have my neutral be in the reverse position and reverse be in the neutral position?

Also in reverse the prop should spin the opposite direction right?

Well, I’m not sure just how the shift rod connects in that 54 25hp model, but it would seem like you connected the linkage improperly.  Was the gearcase apart?   I can’t imagine a situation like you describe, perhaps you meant the gearcase is in forward when in the neutral position, and neutral when in reverse.

In any event, the propeller should spin clockwise when in forward, counterclockwise in reverse.  Is the motor running when you are trying to shift it, or are you just rotating the flywheel?  The flwwheel should spin in the clockwise direction when looking down on top of it.  Do not spin the flywheel in the counterclockwise direction or you will damage the rubber water pump impeller…

If you had the shift coupling apart it might be not completely engauged. It must be inserted all the way until the set screw is tightened into the machined slot in the shift shaft, just guessing.

I will download the book now. The gearcase was open.

so what I was saying was when you put the knob up top where the shift cable that goes to the helm connects to reverse position the prop spins free like when its in neutral and when the knob is in the neutral position the prop is now engaged. but regardless the prop doesn’t spin the opposite direction at all which means I’m only getting neutral and forward out of the shifting and no reverse like I thought. I may be able to make a video to post.

I thought it was set good but I’m gonna have to double check. I mean I’m gonna have to pull the case apart to see what’s going on.

I have had an E mail to Garry for 3 weeks now to both Florida & Michigan without a repy, I’m sad he didn’t reply! I knew he was writing a book a long time ago.

                        Miss his photos too!

Drop the gearcase & try manually try moving the shift shaft to see if you get F,N,& R before taking it apart. Did you install with gearcase & shift lever both in forward gear & be sure to remove the set screw on the coupling all the way to see  it seats properly.

I had a 54 Evinrude Superfastwin & it’s proberly  the  same design as my 15hp, loved that motor, always ran very well!
