Well, started on 2 cylinders, then dropped the top one again, picked it back up and dropped it 2 more times in 20 minutes of running… time to go thru the entire ignition and fuel system …LOL
gotta love this stuff 🙂

None of us 🙁
It seems when the previous "mechanic" replaced the original coils, the upper cylinder coil wire was not inserted far enough into the coil, causing it to fire intermittently, it actually burned, or for a better description, left the little plastic grommet charred and partly missing AND charring the inside of the plug wire socket in the coil. This appeared to leave some rust on the wire in that socket. So as precaution I replaced that coil and BOTH plug wires, as they seemed old and brittle.
Pretty confident this will resolve that cylinder dropping issue. So the $20 question is, would that coil still be usable???
Have a great day guys and thanks for helping.
Regards
Richard

classicomctools@gmail.comApril 20, 2016 at 11:15 pm #35157I bet is that it was the wires all along, I can’t believe how many motors I get that had been "tuned" up but still have the original wires on them. I would certainly try the coil again before chucking it out.
AlApril 21, 2016 at 12:16 am #35164I have no idea why anyone would go to the trouble of changing the coils, but are too lazy to take the mag plate off and insert the plug wire properly, twisting it into the coil. And as Al says, change the darn wire. I mean, we are not talking big money here.

Some people are cheap! I got a JW from a neighbor of my dad for $10 at his yard sale. Coils were OK, but would only run on one cylinder. I found out when I took it apart that the plug wires were cut too short and one got pulled out of the coil when the throttle was advanced. This guy was a notorious cheapskate and all I could figure was he didn’t want to spend the money on the extra 6 inches of wire. 😎
