Yeah, those cracks are surely an issue. But, I’m not sure the pump would actually pull air through there because those cavities seem to be isolated from exhaust as well. Nonetheless, Those cracks may be keeping the SS impeller plate from fitting flat on the gearcase and sealing properly. That casting is pretty thin and relatively delicate, so I really don’t think it could be welded without causing further damage. I would look for a decent gearcase or housing next winter. I wouldn’t waste your time trying to used JB weld or some other epoxy/glue.
August 11, 2023 at 11:39 am #279059AHA, now you are getting someplace. That is freeze damage, caused by expansion of ice. I’ll wager there is more cracking somewhere, letting air or exhaust leak into the intake side of the pump. Those are great water pumps, but lousy air pumps.
Mmmm……As I suggested back on July 23.
All right Frank, don’t rub it in. So I went the long route…… ha ha.
Don, I guess you’re right, I won’t waist my time with JB Weld. Will look for a good used case.
I guess this is all on this long post for now. Hopefully will have a strong water flow with a new gear case, and impeller and plate sealed properly.
Will report back next summer when I get it all back together, and can test on the boat.
Thanks again,
Bob DAugust 11, 2023 at 1:48 pm #279062My experience with freeze damage is somewhat limited, down here in Florida where the current water temperature in the Gulf Of Mexico is edging up toward 100 F. But I have seen such damage on motors that were dragged down here from Upnorth, Canada.

Bob DNobody is “rubbing it in” buddy. Trust me, we have all been in this position, many times.
