Thinking about heading to Bishop soon (probably next weekend) to pick up these 8 motors.
The late owner’s son posted them on Facebook. I’m mostly interested in 1 or 2 of the Johnsons and perhaps the better looking Evinrude.
He and I made a tentative deal, am I doing good or over my head? He had not made any claims about anything ‘running’, so I understand it’s a pig in a poke at this point.
I’m not even sure what motors those Johnson’s are? Is that a TD20?
Anyway – Comments?
Does anyone have any need/interest in any parts you see here? The newer Johnsons and the better Evinrude I would expect would run with no problem, but who knows?
I appreciate it. I would really like to help out anyone needing parts from these motors, I didn’t want to see them not go to good use.
Let me know?
Thanks!

57 Johnson RDE-19October 19, 2023 at 9:26 am #281854Hi John, those old motors will keep you busy for sure! The 1954 Johnson 10hp is one of my favorites. It has the sea horse embossed in the leg. OMC only did that for two years 53 and 54. That makes it special to me anyway! I have both of those years of Johnson 10’s. and they run just great! If your are lucky maybe some of those motors won’t be stuck. Stuck sucks for sure!

Yep! I cant wait! The wife isn’t gonna be so happy tho’. I don’t yet have a plan on where they are all going to go! Including the 2 I already have, that’s 10 motors!
I really hope they all are complete and that especially the Johnsons and the nicer Evinrudes start. No budget to restore them all, so I will have to pick one. I’m going to be smarter this time and get as many as I can running first, then let THEM tell me which one should return to showroom glory.
Thx for the post.

57 Johnson RDE-19October 20, 2023 at 9:07 am #281886that green 5.5 proved to be a chalenge for me when the GC shock absorber got stretched. I think it was damaged it when I dropped it on the cement floor or… it was stretched before my purchase ???
I eventually resorted to tack welding the silly thing at the recommended 6 in.11/16 otherwise it would bind. and plagued my reseal job. now using a brass drive pin on the prop.

October 20, 2023 at 10:40 pm #281916Reminds me of me when I was healther, all of a sudden O had over 50 motors. Now just a few Mercurr’s. 58 22hp, KH7. KF5, 10hp Firestone 1851 & 57 6 cylindeer direct reversong Merc 1957 & a few more. I ended up buying a shrd to store them. Those are great motors!!
Good luck!!!

You did good on that shock absorber! That spring cannot stretch. If one end or the other slips the unit would not get longer. A spring is an inclined plane. When it breaks the coils ride up on each other causing the assembly to get longer. I learned the hard way on the first one I worked on. Pulled it down three times before I figured it out. When it gets longer there is a good chance that the lower water pump housing will crack. You will have a bugger of a time sealing that gear case. I took a hammer to the shock absorber on my bench. I wanted to see what was inside. It is a simple device, one end of the spring is pressed into the top and the other end is pressed into the bottom. I weld every one I work on now. OMC did not expect these motors to last this long!
Couple things you may or not know about that 1954 10hp Johnson. That is the first year for the clam shell hood. The only Johnson to have silver wings on the hood. Last year (until modern times) for the automatic reverse lock. Last year for the four bolt lower unit. One of the best runners I own! The leg has been painted the hood is original.

The motors came home yesterday! 9 hour trip, back and forth.
Great news! All motors move, none seized. I tested the TD20, QD15 and CD12 for compression today. All are at, or slightly greater than, 90psi!
I don’t see any obvious abuse, they all seem to have been cared for fairly well. One might have had a little exposure to saltwater, bit we’ll see. Wish me (beginners) luck.
