Yesterday I started on a 1957 AD11, 7.5hp that I got a few months back. It was lightly stuck when I got it but it freed up easily with a bit of lube, but still felt tight in the lower unit area.

I am always suspecting of these shock absorber lower units, but didn’t find what I expected.

The shock absorber was not the issue having been permanently fixed by a previous owner. The water pump has been upgraded to the new style impeller and it was put in dry causing the tightness. A little grease fixed that.

The biggest surprise is that after taking the time to fix the shock and upgrade the water pump, they left out all the seal pieces at the top of the driveshaft. Just a single o-ring with no groove to sit in. Go figure.

So are you going to tear the powerhead down?

          Frank,

I have nice even compression numbers on this one. Paint and everything make me think it is a low hour motor, but you can never tell. I will likely have a peek inside to make sure the crank is ok on that bottom end.

As I said above, this one was slightly stuck when I got it, but I am really thinking it was the coil stuck to the flywheel. I posted a pic of this in anther thread but will repost. The bore shows no sign of rust or scoring.

I’ve preached on this enough, but my concern would be rust on one of the crank rod journals. It takes only a few grains of that stuff to scratch the rod bearings. Then you find one sticking through the side of the crankcase.

              Frank,

No need to preach to me. I will open it up and make sure things are good before I pull the cord with gas in the tank.

Thanks for all your great experience and advice.

A frustrating situation indeed….Darned if you do, and darned if you don’t. You indicate this is a nice low hour engine, so I would heed Frank’s advice to disassemble. Fortunately, this is a simple powerhead, no needle bearings to deal with….

                  Frank and Don,

Thanks for the replies. To muddy things further, the person who did the water pump and shock absorber mods said the lower engine seal components were intact when he took it apart but got misplaced before he got around to putting it back together. He said he did not run it, probably due to the coils.

Will go inside anyway just for peace of mind.

So I opened it up and found this. A very clean motor. Back together it went.
