Here’s an exploded view of the parts for thermostat housing for Evinrude 18 HP 1960.

This is according to parts diagram at marineengine.

When I assemble this I have to use light force to press and screw the cover in place because the rubber gasket sitting on top of the thermostat seems to be a lifting the thermostat cover a little upwards. Does anyone know if this is normal behavior of the rubber gasket being a little too tight? I don’t have any experience with those parts since the previous owner had removed the thermostat and gaskets. So I’m a little uncertain on how to assemble  those parts.

The rubber seal doesn’t sit on the thermostat, it gets wrapped around it. Looking inside it, you’ll see a small groove in it, which fits on the thermostats flange.  And yes, this seal gets crushed slightly while tightening the cover screws to help make it seal. The gasket is rather thick to and limits how much crush can be applied to the seal.

Here’s a picture showing how the rubber seal fits around the thermostat.

Thank you very much for explaining this to me. Now I understand. I wrapped it around the flange and it fits perfectly just as the image shows. You made my day,  What should I do without you?
