I HAVE A FRIEND THAT I GOT INTO LIKING AND RUNNING 50’S VINTAGE OMC’S. HE IS NOW UP TO 7 OUTBOARDS. I DO ALL HIS MOTOR WORK FOR HIM.
HE HAS A ’56 15 HP FASTWIN HE USES A LOT. IT KEEPS BREAKING THE PULL ROPE. HE IS A BIG GUY WITH LONG ARMS SO I MAKE SURE THE ROPE IS AS LONG AS WILL FIT, HOWEVER, THE ROPE BREAKS WHERE IT IS TIED. I HAVE DEBURRED THE AREA WHERE IT ATT TO THE RECOIL. NYLON ROPE IS NOT GOOD I HAVE FOUND. IS THERE A REALLY GOOD MATERIAL FOR THIS?
HE NEVER BREAKS THE LOANER UNIT I PUT ON TO KEEP HIM GOINGMarch 25, 2015 at 10:20 pm #12770I use mercury rope on my motors no that expensive .

March 26, 2015 at 1:30 am #12782Be aware that not all braded nylon rope is created equal. Most of the stuff that you find in the "box" stores is soft and loosely woven. The good stuff is tightly braded, dense and rather stiff. What kind are you using?

I’ll second that… Power equipment cord is tough and made for the purpose. The power equipment shop I go to has four different diameters, so I just bring in a piece to match up, and I usually buy 20′ or more. It is inexpensive too.

March 27, 2015 at 1:22 am #12831O K, I got a lot of information here. I have just been using hardware store stuff. I ordered a couple different ropes recommended at the proper diameter for stock size 7/32. I was thinking of using something to pad next to the knot too. Shrink wrap may help. I am going to mention to my friend about proper pull starting. He probably has a 6’6" reach and hitting the end of the rope is not good.
Should be able to get him fixed up and learned a bit about recoils for myself.
Thanks 😉 -
