Kentucky will now require titles for boat trailers. This has not been required for trailers under 3500lbs. before. Nor has registration, or licensing.
It can be done. First I make an application for VIN. Once approved, with affidavit of stated ownership history, I can apply for a title.
I have at least 15 old boat trailers, most under old boats, without prior required paperwork. On current inspection, most don’t have VIN, make or model evident and have been painted several times.
The question-Have any other members gone thru wholesale registration issues such as this?
About half of these trailers have no distinguishing marks, and no ID tag or serial numbers.
This is not for registration or taxing purposes. After completion, I can then transfer out of state. Until now, an affidavit would suffice.March 6, 2019 at 7:02 am #170414Welcome to the world. Better get it done while it’s easy. Florida does it’s best to make it a hassle. Here it is easiest done by claiming it is home made. Or threaten the title clerk (ahem).
March 6, 2019 at 9:08 am #170418After I made a comment a couple of years about at the Co. Clerk’s office about it being easier to register a stolen Corvette than a legitimate boat, they offered to make a room for me next door. I decided that the better part of valor would be to end the conversation then by leaving.
March 6, 2019 at 5:41 pm #170457Roger you know they hate it when you’re right. I’ll echo the thought to do it while it’s easy. We even have titles on motors here in Mo. At least they ended it on trolling motors.
March 6, 2019 at 6:37 pm #170458Roger, you didn’t say how much the state was going to charge for the opportunity to provide you with this essential service.
Here in Michigan, as far back as I can remember all trailers were registered and plated. Plates had to be renewed each year at some minimal cost based on weight. Several years ago under a lovely lady Democrat governor she needed a quick boost to the state treasury to cover some immediate short fall. SOOooo- the modest yearly renewal fee was replaced with a $75 one time permanent license plate…. think burning the candle at both ends! I thought, “how long will this last” Now that we elected another Democrat lady last November I’m guessing that the permanent plates will be going By – By soon to be replaced with yearly fees.Joe B ( see ya’ at Constantine)

March 7, 2019 at 5:55 pm #170555Joe, I won’t mention to our representatives what your state does about trailers.
March 7, 2019 at 7:25 pm #170564We can get permanent plates here in Missouri for about 56 bucks. Boat and utility.
March 9, 2019 at 10:49 am #170651I’ve submitted paperwork for the state to originate an ID number, also paperwork for them to next issue a title. So far, no charges, as the paperwork may not go thru. We will only get a title, property taxes not charged, neither are plates required. These problems are going to get worse because of the sticker type of ID on most newer trailers.
March 9, 2019 at 12:06 pm #170659In New York one of my Trailers was registered as home made. That was one way around a trailer with no info on it. We have to do yearly registration and inspection which is a pain in the butt. To get around that, I registered my 3 trailers in the state of Maine. I get a 12 year registration with no yearly inspection. New York state honors it. I did it all thru the mail. If you notice, a lot of tractor trailers have the trailers registered in Maine. At least in the north east.
March 9, 2019 at 12:24 pm #170664I.D. tag,
Had a custom built BSA frame that held the engine oil too to rid the oil tank. Down at Motor Vehicle Dept everything was going good UNTIL I went inside to get the title. Came out & the jerks had attached a brass plate with rivets after drilling two holes in my frame,
Thank you Arizona
We too can get perm or yearly tags for trailers. In the past the car was weighed for reg fee, Not any more, They go by the price (inflated) & yes smog test fee too unless it’s 1965 or earlier, then pay an environ-mental fee! -
