Hello, I am disapointed. Purchased a Bombardier genuine parts tune up kit # 172522 on EBAY ( made in turkey ) for a1958 Johnson 18 HP. outboard. Installed points on breaker plate and found point contact’s misalighned ( one contact higher than the other ) my first disapointment. I figured they were just poorly made but would still probably work OK. When I went to time points with my timing tool (made by Frank Robb an excellent tool that I have used before with no problem ) I found at the proper position for the points to open there was not enough travel on the excentric scew to break the points open This was my second disapointment. So i removed the point set and my idea was to bend slightly the metal of the movable half of the point set so the excentric would be able to break the points open at the correct time. Upon inspection of the movable point I discovered the metal of the movable point could slide up and down the brown plastic sleeve that goes over the stud on the breaker plate resulting in the contact misalighnment I described earlier. My 1st. question is this what I can expect when buying Bombardier new points? 2nd. question is there any other brands that might be better quality ( example Sierra ) 3rd. question would I be better off trying to resurface the original factory points and reusing them? Again DISAPOINTED. I can probably epoxy the movable metal part of point set to the plastic sleeve and correct the misalighnment problem and bend arm so I can break the points at correct time but I have several motors to do What would you all suggest as the best solution. and please answer my three other questions Regards Bill,.

I bought some awhile ago and I thought they stunk, too. Even Sierra is better than those pieces of junk; and Sierra was always junk! I have been resurfacing the good ol’ OEM ones and they work great.

        Long live American manufacturing!

I have seen other reports of those new BRP points being defective. Maybe that’s the way it is these days. As for me, I’ve been re-surfacing and re-using old ones. I have a collection of them. Might put some up for sale in the classified pages.

I didn’t know you could resurface points .. I tried googling it but didn’t find . Is there a thread here that explains the procedure?
Sorry for the hyjack , sounds interesting !

Get yourself an ignition point file. After you have the points as smooth as the file can get them, wrap the file with #400 wet-or-dry sandpaper and polish them up more. Here is one source of files:

I use a sharpening stone for edged tools. Start with coarse and move to fine. Use oil on the stone. One point flat and the other convex.

I just replaced mine on a 76′ 15hp. Had to drag a strip of 600 paper between the rubbing block and the cam on one set as the block was not square with the cam. They were NOS.

My update; I decided to go with the old set’s of points overall they are much better quality built. Tried to use a new small file but the tungsten actually dulls the file. I had a brand new small knife sharpening stone 220 grit that I tried and that worked great. I do not think I will buy anymore Bombardier points I don’t think the quality is there. What a disapointment that they manufacture or buy a product to sell and it is cheapened to the point that it is marginal when new. How many pennies did they save by not making them as the originals. I realize that these engines are 50 plus years old and not high on the agenda for Bombardier and they are made overseas but they make a lot of things overseas some very good quality. Bottom line is Bombardier sets the quality standards and their standard is poor.

I got the same problem with OEM Bombardier points. One of them fit well one side and have enough gap to set the gap correctly. The other set could not open wide enough to set correct gap. So I filed one point to get it right. Now I just used the old point and clean them up, resuse them!

After getting them refinished clean with acetone & put a little grease on the piviot surface. Use an meter to Check for shorts.
Bomb just farmed out the points to anyone !!!!!!!!! Turkeys anyway.

The Turkish made points have always been good for me but with BRP out of the outboard business now, they probably don’t give a rats tail about the quality of any of their parts now.
