      I think much has to do with how the motor is used. Racing at wide open I would use more oil. For fishing I would mix at 40/1 just because the motors are older & the metals used to build has improved too. Then comes the politics of the EPA & even at one time going to 100/1, We know how that worked. I also pay the price of manufacturers premix oil too except ScottAtawater. I use Mercury brand oil in the Scotts. Sad to say the price of premix will not enter into the equation because I don’t get out that often. 😥

        You are correct. Larger OMC’s were not fully jewelled until at least ’57. Up until then, a lot of non bearing wrist pins were present. Aside from that, oil is the cheapest thing you’ll ever put in an outboard. The extra two ounces will just prolong the life of your classic 😀
