      Hi guys,
I have some bad damage to a Mark 55 gear case. It looks like it may have frozen at some point and blew the front off the case where the bearing retainer threads in. Can this be welded up, or is it junk.

        Yes it’s toast.
Wish I would have taken a picture of a Mark 58a I bought for the power head some time back.Seems the owner before had that same problem and did weld all the way around. They are still around hit your local meets or post a WTB ad.

I have been known to say that "I can fix anything with nothing", but in this case I would not even try.

If your going to replace it anyway, it may be a good time to practice with those aluminum brasing rods. I have replaced a few missing skegs using that material.

Really good welder and machinist (seldom same person) can work wonders.
That being said a good replacement case would be easier to find and cost less.
As the saying goes "they are around so ask around"
Tag and save the old case as it may be needed as a reference and as a reminder to drain before
                Winter storage.

I would try to weld it if I had no other choice, I have welded up several cases like that. You have to be careful to get enough penetration to make a sound weld, but too much and you blow through and then you have no threads left to work with. Not an easy repair. I do have a good case for that motor if you are looking for one. I am in Kenosha, so not too far.

I found one Steve. I had to beg and plead with my neighbor, but he coughed one up for $50. It’s on a 59 he stripped for parts to finish another motor. I told him if he did not sell it to me I would have my dog pay his yard a visit every day while he was at work…. 😈 😈
                      Thank you for the offer.
