I recently took the carb of a 1948 Evinrude SpeediTwin project that I have going and took it apart for cleaning. Lots of nasty crud and varnish inside so I put it in a can of Carb Dip. Just before I closed the lid, I tossed the brass float in as well.

I forgot about it for a couple days, then took the pieces out of the solution and rinsed them off. The float now had liquid INSIDE!!!

At first I thought it was a pin hole, but the card dip actually corroded the brass to the point of making it brittle and porous. Now I need a new float!

Just want to post this so others will not make the same mistake.

Anybody want a can of Carb Dip?? 😎

I think it was Gary S. that warned of putting the sintered fuel filters in carb cleaner as it will turn those to powder also. 🙁

          Wedgie,

Yes, I knew that also. Won’t do it again.

            Wedjie,
I use air conditioning coil cleaner for filters. It’s made to spray on the aluminum evaporator coils inside the AC unit. Fill a old pill bottle & let it sit for a few days, then flush with water. It does a great job! The cleaner is bright green in a plastic bottle sold at AC contractors supply.

Wow! What kind of carb cleaner was it? I’ve never seen anything that strong yet.

It was "Berrymans". Right off the shelf at Wally-World.

I love to use 50/50 Pinesol and hot water.
