When kits are not available for carb rebuild, where does one find things like core plugs and packing washers.

        what carb is it….

main gaskets can be cut from stock in a real bind packing washers can be replaced with packing twine don’t mess with core plugs yet…

blow all passages with carb cleaner (and safety glasses) blow with air pressure

do not spray floats with carb cleaner if decent looking…… dry up the cork and reseal with hobby fuel proof airplane dope

Airplane dope I have. Gasket material as well. It’s the packing washers I have no experience with. Hard to even get to an auto supply store during COVID shut down to see what’s available.

Tubs told me at one time that cotton string works for packing.

the whole industry uses ” stuffing boxes” on rotating shafts and pistons… sealing up a carb shaft with “stuff” should work.

I’m 100% sure there was an article in the club magazine within the past year that stated how to make your own packing washers using certain sizes of hollow punches. I can’t find my copy of that issue or I’d post a scan of it.

As for the core plugs (aka Welsh plugs) you really don’t need to remove it unless the carburetor is horrid, and I mean HORRID. Carb cleaner and compressed air at least 80psi but 100psi is better, through every orifice and that carb will be good to go.

It would help to know what motor you’re working on. There may be a kit which will have most of the components you need. Most kits have components for several motors and have several sized Welch plugs, and one may fit your carb. There are only a couple sizes of packing washers so a kit for a similar motor may work.

It’s an RD 10. 1951 Johnson. I took trex advice and left the Welch plug in. Soaked it in acetone over night. It cleaned up very good. Resealed the float and it seems to be ok. It has the old packing washers in for now. Not sure why my pictures are sideways?
