I am working on a 5.5hp CD 17 it was on a small aluminum fishing boat I obtained last year by trading a 18hp twin for it. I have never worked on one and I have a few questions. I don’t know what the heck is going on with the top seal on crankshaft possibly someone here can look at the pics and figure it out. I am unfamiliar with the top seal on this motor and can’t really figure out looking at marine engines schematic. Looks like it was hammered in there somehow.
I did see that it has a slinger not a seal on the top. I am hoping to get it running it has great compression and new coils so it won’t take much to get it to go I am hoping this won’t stop it from running well.
Thanks for the help,
Joe
May 28, 2017 at 2:42 pm #58517It looks normal to me. The top "seal" is not really a seal at all, it is an oil slinger. The only way to replace it, if needed, is to split the crankcase, remove the crankshaft and press off and press on a new oil slinger ring. To be honest, I have never replaced one because I have never found one to be bad. As the Brit’s say "Chive on. bloke".

May 28, 2017 at 3:09 pm #58520The primer colored area is part of the casting and the slinger is hidden right below it. Perfectly normal.
May 28, 2017 at 8:57 pm #58544Oil creeping up the crankshaft is thrown out into a recess in the casting which is drained by a passage leading to the intake manifold. Since there is no metal to metal contact, they NEVER ware out. Failure happens when the passage to the intake manifold is blocked. Cleaning the blockage solves the problem. . . 😀

May 29, 2017 at 2:08 am #58564Unless you know the impeller has been replaced recently get a power head gasket and impeller. I have a CD-16 that has had a fairly rough life in our family does not look perfect but starts usually on 1 or 2 pulls even after setting a year.

how is it motors multiply when the garage lights get
turned off?May 29, 2017 at 11:07 am #58571not certain … but on the 5.5 cd17 you may need to pull the head to change the impeller.
looks complicated but isn’t really that hard to do .

May 29, 2017 at 6:41 pm #58590Shes all back together and running very well. Cleaned the carb, new iginition wires, new fuel lines and clamps, new starter rope etc.
Since it was a bit dirty under the magneto and the points were trashed I decided to convert her to electronic modules since I had a couple laying around and thought Ii would give them a whirl. I used a set on my 9.5hp Johnson which allows it to really get down and idle very slow since they fire exactly 180 apart every time. I solder the wires to the modules and keep them as short as possible this allows me to mount them under the magneto plate. I have heard folks here say they haven’t had much luck with the Nova modules but this is the second motor I have put them on and I already had a some so I thought what the heck.
I will put a new impeller on her now that I know shes a runner. Very quiet engine I am guessing it was one without roller bearings and has pretty low hours on the power head. I took a pick of my conversion and a couple videos on is without the cowl on when I was fine tuning the carb which was pretty simple on this particular engine. I did put a dab of black silicone under the positive side of the module to make sure it doesn’t accidentally ground itself. She really gets down and idles very slowly.
You can’t do the conversion on all motors. Just the ones with 1 set of magnets under the flywheel and weights on the other side opposite the magnets. I have only had success with omc motors 2 cylinders.
Thanks for your help guys,
Joe 😀
