Mumbles,
This is the second one of these conversions I have done. Both of my conversions had newer style Chinese coils. Not sure if they were made in china or where but they are not OMC. I did purchase one set of coils from marine engine . com they were black in color and I haven’t had a problem with them. The other set of newer style coils were already in the 5.5hp I have been working on.
Looking at you picture your coils look like old stock or new old stock.
I am building a small dock on my lake for my pontoon boat which I wouldn’t be doing if my other boats weren’t some 30 feet in the air on boat lifts. Our lake is challenged for a better word for what I think about the progress right now. Its Boone Lake in Eastern Tennessee. The dam is suppose to be leaking underneath and TVA is trying to fix the problem. Might be 10 plus years to fix or never and most likely I will be dead. I am going to use this little motor to help build me a small dock at my house for my lately acquired pontoon to scuttle logistics. Last year I built steps some 70 feet down to the lake. I am hopping the 5.5 hp will do well as a work mule. So I hopefully will be able to REPORT back with how she does and how coils/modules hold up. She has newer Chinese Style coils.
I suspect older style coils might not work well with Nova modules because of the way current coils are made
?????but what the heck I don’t know much about boat motors. I only know what I know from trying to keep me and the wife’s old boat motors alive since the mid 80s when we couldn’t afford a new one but then it became a Sick Hobby as I got older lol 😀 .Anyway enough ranting I love reading and learning here on all boat motor information here. I read all new posts everyday and love trying to learn from reading I wish I had access to this in the 80s.
Thanks for the help and I will let everyone know here if the modules take a crap or if they hold up this summer.

May 31, 2017 at 12:12 am #58659ha the 80’s no such e-mails ……unless you worked under a Corporate system . I remember the boss telling his team that men… would now have to type their own reports and letters …. no more dishing it out to "secretaries" . You had to write a business case to purchase a $4K IBM PC..with 64KB of ram and a 40 megabit hard disk, all this for approval by the Corporate IT gurus who dreaded to see their systems " prisonners" moving away to stand-alone computers 😯
In the communication world a 1.5MB/s line needed "special engineering" specs only affordable by large enterprises
paper was going to disappear from office folders into floppy disk ,diskettes and 300 megabyte storage full of stacked LP’s … but everybody kept a copy.. in case
in 1971 the big thing was moving up from teletype services to dial-up modems running 110 bits per second !! then came 300BPS 600 BPS 1200 BPS

May 31, 2017 at 12:18 am #58660To do the impeller you need to dismount the powerhead, so you may want to order a new gasket in case you need it. When you get into the water pump, check the "shock absorber" on the lower drive shaft–It’s not unusual for them to separate and put a lot of friction on the underside of the water pump base. I did one of these motors last year. Nice little motor but not a lot of get-up-and-go for the weight.
May 31, 2017 at 12:27 pm #58683Glad you guys told me about having to take off the power head to change impeller. I also have a 5.5hp 1961 it is like brand new under the cover I got it from the original owner. Guess I will order 2 impellers and a new base gaskets. I bet they haven’t been changed lately. I think I will sell the 1961 5.5hp I like the style of the 1960 better.
I have run about 3 gallons through the engine in the tank fine tuning her etc. So far modules are holding out.

May 31, 2017 at 4:47 pm #58695Per FrankR those base gaskets are #313065 or Sierra #18-2901-9 for a two pack. The late motors have rubber mounts. He told me long ago that spring mounted exhaust housings take the old gasket #304314/Sierra #18-2894-9 is the two pack. That’s the best way to keep it straight. The gasket under the water pump for the gearcase shaft is #303339/Sierra #18-2891-9 for the two pack. -9 is for the 2 pack in Sierra. Not all vendors carry these. Just drop the last digit and order two if they don’t reconize the two pack # (NAPA). Hope that helps!
Edit: The early ’54/’55 CD motors take a third gasket #303467 that is different. Only available from BRP. Sorry for the misleading info. I don’t think FrankR told me this after all. I figure he knows better! You learn something everyday.

Thanks so much for the info Dan. Everyone here is great. I have been working all day putting a dock/cradle in for this little fishing boat here on my lake in East Tennessee.
