just installed a pair of coils on a 4hp … I was surprised to find 9Kohm on the HV secondary
so many windings could certainly boost the sparks yet they could also be fragrile . 4 —-7 kohms is usually what I get on coils so time will tell
Mumbles …this was your picture of same coils…. did you get 9Kohms ??

December 18, 2021 at 6:32 pm #251320Last year I bought about 20 of those coils. The secondary resistance varied between 7.5- 16 Kohms. Most of these were used in non OMC products as coil conversions. I wouldn’t put these coils in motors that were to be trusted out on the lake.
I have had good luck with the CDI brand coils.-

December 19, 2021 at 5:58 am #251341I used two in an 18 Fastwin. I tested the motor in a barrel at about 1:00 in the afternoon. Perfect. I drove it a 1/4 mile down to the lake, launched the boat, started to motor and one coil was already dead. 1:15 in the afternoon. I thought, “Oh my goodness me, what did I do wrong”; but troubleshooting put it squarely on a failed coil. What a waste of my very precious free time. This is just what the Chinamen want, secondarily to putting the West out of business, that is. I wouldn’t have bought the damn thing but I don’t believe we have an option anymore, do we?

December 19, 2021 at 7:57 am #251347thanks all for comments on these ..higher than usual coils ohms wise anyway.
I’ll be on the look out for failures next summer unfortunately for the moment it basement testing only 🙁
btw… I never looked closely but a lot of Ebay/amazon coils sold are listed as or eqv. to 584477 coils but these in the pict are 512xxx….s ???
who knows these twins may very well be destined for non-outboard apps ?

December 19, 2021 at 12:18 pm #251360I’ve used over sixty of the black Ebay Zhongfadz coils now without any failures. Most of these were installed on my own motors with a few on other peoples motors and no one has come back complaining yet. Knock on wood!
A couple of Amazonian ones I picked up a month or two back were green and I could swear they came out of the German Prufrex molds. The ohm readings on these ones were higher than OMC/BRP coils, around 7.8K, just like the black ones.

December 29, 2021 at 8:52 am #251872Just redid my latest CD-11 with 9 Kohm coils.. unlike a recent 4hp using the coils and getting strong sparks this latest pair does not seem to generate good sparks
(condensers test good on the “Mohat box” points cleaned and new wires …)
it may be just spinn speed for now because the engine seems a bit to hard to sprin with the plugs out ??? i’ll drop the GC anyway to do the pump and see if this uncommon resistance comes from.
it realy feels like compression yet the plugs are out ?? waiting for a big dump of snow to hide in the cave and work on it 🙂
this is a grandpa motor pampered all it’s life.
