How do I get the baked-on exhaust crud out of my ’29 P-45 exhaust manifolds? Heating and cooling them seems to help, but I’d like to get most or all out before I fire this motor up. Any members have a surefire way to remove tehse deposits?

On most of the 20s and 30s manifolds I’ve done it usually takes old fashioned elbow grease to chip and scrape it off.

I started with the ultrasonic bath, then went onto a nasty drain cleaner gel, which I was concerned about using…The Elfin Safety instructions proposed doom and gloom if I got it wrong, or heaven forbid, I should accidentally splash some on bare skin. Then followed it with oven cleaner (didn’t work) and finally the plumber’s torch. The torch works well, but I must have burned it off and cooled them down at least 20 times – guess there are no shortcuts or magic mixture. I did wonder if soaking in vinegar might help?

Soda blasting works well if you can get the nozzle in there. You can also rattle a chain to knock it loose.
