Don’t repeat my mistake. I coated the float in my 1957 35hp Johnson a little over a year ago with POR-15. I’d like to report that it does not work out well. It blisters and separates from the cork. In my case the blistering ended up causing a hanging up float and carb flooding.

Thanks, I have some and was tempted to try it…..I guess it will go on the underside of my truck where it belongs.

I may try this on my next float. Anyone else tried it? Works great on fuel tanks.

Did one float using a different brand.
Was fine for a few years then had the
              same result as
              VinTin
(Large blister causing float to hanging up.)

You can order a small can of POR15 from Amazon and get it in a couple of days. AT the moment, $13.92 for 8 oz, which is enough to do a bunch of floats. I have only about a year’s experience with it but over that time period it seems to hold up.

Possibly there are some flavors of model airplane dope that hold up but why take a chance?

There will be a layer of aluminum flake (pigment) in the bottom. For coating a float it may not matter but for tank coating it needs to be fully stirred up, or you will have a glop layer at the bottom that won’t spread readily.

I agree with the advice to get a new float if available at a reasonable price, especially for a paying job.

crazy glue worked for me so far…. I used the thick type 2 coats on several floats…. maybe I need to open up a few carbs for inspection.

Any chance the float wasn’t dried out adequately first?

Here’s a question I haven’t seen addressed yet in this thread. For those of you that tried the aero-gloss or any other airplane dope, are you using ethanol-free gas? I have coated multiple old cork floats with aero-gloss without any issues. I am on year 4 with a number of them. But, I never, ever, ever use gas that has any ethanol in it. Years ago on this board we had discussions about dope and ethanol and determined it’s best not to use ethanol at all. It’s not compatible with many of the components in the fuel systems of these old motors. So, are you using gas with ethanol in it or not?

The floats were very dry and light.
