Mine is in a ’68, even though the ’68 parts manual doesn’t show it. My o-ring is in pretty good condition, although slightly flat. I was wondering if it was some kind of additional slinger but I don’t know where it would sling anthing TO. Maybe it acts as a kind of labyrinth seal.

I don’t know why they added the oring, wasn’t even aware that they did that. Those crankshaft slingers do a pretty good job of directing oil/gas back down through the intake manifold. The oring must be in addition to the slinger, acting as an upper seal…It surely can not hurt to put in back in place, the oring lasted all these years, don’t think it’s gonna fail now…Hmmm, I better keep my mouth shut, who knows how today’s fuels might react with it….

Thanks everyone for the great input. Will use the original, get this back together and plop it in the water. Appreciate all!

Last 2 cents worth of comment….someone is always trying to make good into perfect by making it more complex. Often simple is sufficient and complex only adds cost. Somewhere between drafting board and production lie test and development. Some good ideas really are good and some need more work.

Bearings, seals, fasteners and O rings are STANDARDIZED, designers and engineers use off the shelf items due to HIGH cost of limited production specialty items. O rings are likely to be Metric and Inch stands. Anything made in USA prior to late 1970s will almost certainly  be Inch standard. As with bearings, seals and fasteners, O ring makers had to make their standards known and widely available to designers and engineers. Somewhere on the iuternet there will be much more than you want or need to know about O rings…including how to determine size of the O ring you need to replace. Headache Yes, Impossible No.
