      Hello All,
A few months back I picked up an 8′ G W Invader hydro that I’m bringing back to life. My intention is to run one of my FD 18’s or 20’s on it. The way the boat is set up I do not have room for even the stock 3 gallon metal OMC tank. A lower profile plastic tank from Perko or Atwood is also a very tight fit. This is due to the boat being covered with a motor well, not open on top like a more traditional hydro design. I would be fine with 1 or 2 gallons of capacity in a tank. Have any of you ever come up with some creative ideas for small capacity fuel tanks for your hydros? I’m looking for some ideas/ alternatives to running a traditional tank.

      Thanks Guys,

      Wannabe

Check out a wholesale bakery supply for stainless steel steam table trays. A couple welded rim to rim to rim would be low enough to slip under the deck. If your running without a cover, I have seen a mercury racer with an Elto Lightwin fuel tank mounted behind the flywheel. At the next meet I was disappointed to see he had repainted it to match the motor . . . 😀

            I’m with Dave,
If you have a fuel pump mount it behind the motor on the steering bar with extra brackets. Seen many hydros set up like that.

              Thanks Guys,
I was contacted by a member about 10 minutes after posting this thread. He had a steering bar mounted tank for sale so we reached a deal. While I’m waiting I’ll be fabbing a steering bar to fit the FD. Man I love this site. Problem solved in an hour.

Many boat racers ( for decades ) , fab their tanks of high grade okoume plywood and bonded together using EPOXY resin !
note- usually having an engine with a fuel pump, will lower the center of gravity… one racer who comes to mind is Long Island . NY State’s Howie Pickerell 😀

I guess it’s too late now but what about a Merc three gallon tank?

I have also heard some guys use the OMC VRO oil tank, which comes with its own hose and primer bulb!

                  Long live American manufacturing!

That would be a better use of the VRO tank then it’s original purpose 🙂

OMC 1.8 or 3 gallon VRO tank will work. Better one to use is the Merc oil tank with the double hose arrangement. Since you are going a different way already I guess this is just for those reading the thread who may want an alternative tank.

                        Pappy,
Remember the 1962 OMC Dual Deluxe boat running two I/O drives & laid down 88hp V-4 motors? I have two old oil tanks that would work & around 1.5 gallons. Remember when they first came out & had oil injection. I still have both tanks for him to use if he wants complete with two lines & gauge sender & cap. Would be perfect behind on the steering bar.
