I just picked up a 14K1 3S & a KD35. The K1 is 2.5hp & the KD is 4hp, both 1940 motors. Anyone have one of these motors? How hard are they to work on?
Thanks,
JeffDecember 7, 2016 at 10:16 pm #4880114K1 8821 Sea King 1941 model has poppet valve fuel mixer and sheet metal clamp assembly. Not difficult to work on.
Mercury KD3S 1947 model rewind equipped postwar war model has Bendix magneto and anti friction bearings all of which can need work. Helps to have Mercury Service Tools to remove and install magnet rotor. A few self made tools and techniques helpful in disassembly
and reassembly.
The prewar Kiekhaefer singles are a little more complex than they appear. The fasteners
are often mixed up or missing due to careless workmanship. Detective work needed to
sort that out and to find correct replacement fasteners. Postwar models have same issues
plus more complex starter, corroded bearings, and need to remove and replace magnet
rotor when renewing upper seal and bearings.
Some problems like a leaky gas tank (cast aluminum tank) are easy to resolve at low cost.. R

December 9, 2016 at 5:39 pm #48926Is there enough interest in the Early Kiekhaefer outboards to justify a continuing Q & A with
photo articles on such subjects as dealing with stuck powerheads, resealing cast aluminum tanks, removing stuck swivel pin, making the leather drive shaft seal?. If so, I will talk to
Travis to see what is possible and what is not.

December 9, 2016 at 10:14 pm #48939Well, I am always interested. It would be nice to see a little more of the Merc stuff here without having to go to a whole different site.
Long live American manufacturing!

December 12, 2016 at 1:22 am #49044Leather was certainly utilized for a packing to seal the driveshaft on the early lower units, but the replacement is a rubber seal, and possibly adopted into production for the models after World War II. We do have a few of the rubber seals.
