Working on a wonderful (?) ’46 2 1/2 hp Elgin. I probably don’t have anything which will interchange with the worn out water pump, but I have to look. Okay, how do I get the lower off to find out? One 7/16 bolt exposed, now what holds the rest of it on? Hopefully not something under the powerhead.

Is there a clip hiding the other bolt?

This one shows a long bolt, but not sure how you unscrew it!

You have to remove the powerhead, then the steering pivot pin (19019 King Pin). It is held in by the groove pin at the bottom. THEN you can remove the special nut 18006 from the top end of that long stud 19008. Probably will have to concoct a special slotted screwdriver.

Are you sure the pump is worn out? Will it pump enough water at idle speed? That pump vane is kind of tricky. I had to make my own from a piece of Delrin.

That is what I was afraid of. Might as well take it all apart, since I’ve gone this far. If I can find or make a pump, I’ll go further. I also have the littler air cooled model, so that won’t be a problem. Thank you for the help.

I’m remembering the right motor. a quad ring is a perfect replacement for the gearcase drive & prop shaft seals

Finally got it apart and cleaned up. Should work if I can get the rest of the motor going. I appreciate the help. Pretty neat design after all.

Lower unit back together, powerhead on, and ignition firing on one cylinder. Of course, that’s all that I expect to fire. Carb is soaking.
