As usual the coil in my cub is open. I was successful in doing surgery on one in the past and we’ll see about this one.
Is there another coil that can be adapted for use?July 3, 2018 at 12:10 pm #78940Just recently did one.
Took longer than I expected.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71W9cPMV09A
A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
July 3, 2018 at 12:50 pm #78942Another option for a coil is a Disston Mercury D0-100 DO-101 Chainsaw Coil. that what I used on my Cub.
As with Tubs coil, it involved a bit of cutting and grinding. Found mine on EBay.

They are small coils indeed.
Was thinking of trying one of those single output "miltary standard" coils. Will do some measurementsJuly 5, 2018 at 2:45 pm #79070Well, exploratory coil surgery went ok.
I was able to find the broken end eventually and now have good secondary resistance.
I have a new lug made that will anchor better in the coil. The original lugs were way to small and poorly anchored and it didn’t take much to snap the extremely fine secondary wire.
I’ll post some pictures when I put it all back together.July 13, 2018 at 3:43 pm #79491Finally was able to put it all back together.
I made a bigger T shape lug and anchored it well.
Used dual wall heat shrink as the outside insulation.
Patience is the key when attempting to do this. The wire is so fine it breaks really easy.
Will put the mag back together and check for spark.July 13, 2018 at 3:44 pm #79492Was the original spark plug wire on the Cubs cloth covered or just rubber?

July 13, 2018 at 11:10 pm #79513Thanks Tubbs. I assembled the mag today and roughly set the points. Got a nice decent spark again.
