I am working on this 2 hp evinrude [model 4409 ] and would like to know what lube goes in the gearcase?
January 27, 2019 at 2:52 am #164923I am partial to John Deere Corn Husker Grease.

January 27, 2019 at 4:56 am #164926I thought that was what I would use “corn head grease” just wanted a second opinion. do I want to pack it full or leave some air space?
January 27, 2019 at 2:54 pm #165098TSC has Super S Spindle grease that should work well too. Corn Head grease comes in a grease gun tube, the Super S stuff comes in a quart squeeze bottle, a little easier to deal with. Note that regular grease is NLG #2 for wheel bearings not gear cases, (even if it says “Marine”). https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/super-s-cotton-picker-spindle-grease-00
January 27, 2019 at 3:27 pm #165120What year is your motor? I have a 1947 Sportsman and the Owner’s Manual specifically states to use oil and NOT grease in the gearcase.
January 27, 2019 at 7:25 pm #165133the 4409 is a 1946 model . what is in there now is grease but that is not to say it is correct. hence the question here . I figure if anyone knows it would be a AOMCI member.
January 28, 2019 at 1:56 am #165143As as general rule, angled drives require gear oil as they have a ball bearing above the pinion gear and lip seals on the shafts. Older right angle drives without lip seals had bushings and used grease otherwise the oil would leak out and water would get in.

January 28, 2019 at 9:22 am #165161ok, mine is the right angle drive so it looks like stiff grease for me . How much grease does it get? packed full or 1/2. thanks for all the help so far
January 28, 2019 at 10:21 am #165164I can’t sit here and guarantee for sure that it has a fill and vent screw, but the usual procedure is to squeeze the grease into the fill screw till it comes out the vent screw. Bottom line is it more or less fills it up. Some small air pockets may happen.
January 28, 2019 at 10:46 am #165168Highly recommended to shy away from a heavy or stiff grease as it won’t flow into the bearings like the John Deere Cornhead grease will., P/N AN102562. Running in cold water makes the situation worse.
Here’s a link to the grease:

And a short video promoting it.
