    Hi. A couple of questions.

    1) I’m stripping and going to repaint my 57 Evinrude Big Twin cowling.  The left and right side of the cowling have circular plastic Evinrude “E” emblems held onto the cowling by 3 small – since I don’t know what they’re called, let’s call them “gizmos” –  that insert through the circular emblem and through the cowling (see photo). In the center of each little gizmo is a pin that, went inserted, spreads out the little arms of the Gizmo on the backside of the cowling, holding the emblem in place. When you remove the pin the little arms on the Gizmo retract enough that you can then pull them out and remove the emblem. Which I have done. I was very careful, but one of the gizmos arms got a little damaged. If I wanted to replace this Gizmo, I would do an internet search. But I don’t know what the Gizmo is called. Does anybody know the proper name for this little item?

    2) One of the plastic circular E emblems has a bad crack. Is there any source for a replacement?

Thanks in advance for any help on these questions!

    Matt

The original medallion fasteners are still available at marineengine.com.  MarineEngine.com

The medallions are very difficult to find NOS and are usually very expensive if you can even find one.

I have had very good results repairing and refinishing these medallions even when cracked in half as long as the medallion is complete.

One more quick question: I’m going to attempt to restore this cowling to its original look. I’ve been cruising the internet looking for images of cowlings for the 35 HP Big Twin to use as an example for how mine should look when it’s done. I’ve yet to find one that looks like mine. My cowling has a chrome Evinrude script  on it. See attached photo. I’ve not found a photo on the internet that has that. Thoughts?

Your cowl may be the one with the “Electric Starting” badging. The “Electric Starting” 18 Hp has the same chromed “Evinrude” badge on the upper part of the cowl just like yours.

I have one with an original hood.  The electric start wire plug has been deleted for a pig tail hook up.  The hood is correct.  I was surprised it only weighs 130lbs.   Feels like lots more.
