Need2fish thanks for the info regarding how common and destructive the exhaust leaks are. From what I can tell visually it appears my exhaust leak is resolved but as you indicate it is hard to see internally. I know my plugs are not wet when I pull them so hopefully my last fix resolved the issue. I use my electric kitchen stove surface for my surfacing plate, gotta make sure I only do this when the wifey is gone!!

I did not get this back in the tank yet but I rechecked spark and found weak spark on upper cylinder with my air gap tester. Pulled flywheel and got high ohm reading across top points. Cleaned them up real well. Rechecked points and both Top and bottom now register 0.01 ohms of resistance across them. Rechecked and both top and bottom timing was on. Put Flywheel back on and now both top and bottom jump 3/8 gap again. Will see tonight if that resolves it.

Yes, your plug wires are routed correctly….Don’t know if the fastwins use the same type spring as the 10hps, but it can’t hurt to add one. I have been using that black plastic spiral wrap around the wires up by the mag plate, that holds the wires together helps keep the wires from jamming on the bracket…You can probably get the spiral wrap and the inline neon testers are Harbor Freight or an auto parts store…

          Crowsbeak,
          Jeff here,
I lost your e-mail letter so I can’t send you the pics of the magneto parts.
It is Jeff.50@cox.net if still interested.

Jeff-I sent you an email. Fleetwin, thank you for confirming the plug wires are routed correctly I will get some spiral wrap as you suggest. Unfortunately our Harbor Freight will not be open for a few more weeks but I will look for the spark checkers when they open.

I got this in the tank tonight and think I finally got the idle dialed in!! A lake test will confirm but it was holding a very nice idle tonight. Thanks to everyone for all your great comments, help and suggestions. I really enjoyed the challenge of getting this girl back in service for another 60 years!

I just picked up a 1956 Johnson 7.5 AD10M and can’t wait to start tearing into that. A new thread will be forthcoming.

That 18hp is in great shape and you did a fine job with it…..
