I recently acquired an old outboard motor and have been looking for information on it but can’t really find anything out there. I was hoping to find something in here. I only found online that it could possibly be from WWII, and onboard a possible US Navy Vessel at some point due to the Bureau of Ships # on it.

This appears to be an early 1940’s Evinrude Lightfour. The Bureau of ships placard piqued my interest, so I found some interesting information on Wikipedia: Bureau of Ships – Wikipedia.

Shipbuilding and maintenance are mentioned amongst many duties of the Bureau of Ships, so who knows. Looks like it has a military history, but probably not in combat.

The 4319 model number indicates it to be a year model 1939 Lightfour heavy duty version.

I have a spreadsheet showing 4319 was used a number of years.  The serial indicates the year:

          Evinrude,1939,1939/45,4319,Lightfour-HD-Long Shaft,up to 03000,9.70
          Evinrude,1940,1939/45,4319,Lightfour-HD-Long Shaft,03001-04000,9.70
          Evinrude,1941,1939/45,4319,Lightfour-HD-Long Shaft,04001-05000,9.70
          Evinrude,1945,1939/45,4319,Lightfour-HD-Long Shaft,”05001-90,000″,9.70
          Evinrude,1941,1939/45,4319,Lightfour-HD-Long Shaft,”90,001-91,000″,9.70
          Evinrude,1942,1939/45,4319,Lightfour-HD-Long Shaft,”91,001 and up”,9.70

Which looks like the same info as in “The Old Outboard Book”
