That’s strange, every Sierra point set I have bought contains an oiler wick in every one of the pkg’s. 18-5156. So much so that I have had a stock of extra wicks in the past as the outboard only uses one.
I did notice that they do not hold a .020 setting without changing everytime I rotate the crank and re-check.
I will go to the good ones from now on, thanks for the info!

I agree! I own a 1965 Chevy van with the same "Iron Duke" 4 cylinder motor. Some of the points I have found are junk. Still looking for a marine head to put on it & Clifford headers, you know the cross flow head.
JeffOctober 3, 2016 at 9:29 pm #45133Jeff, anymore, I’ve been finding them on Ebay. there are a lot of NOS ignition parts out there on some distant shelf. I’t’s worth it for me to pay a little extra to get good ones. I don’t know what we will do when all the good stuff is gone.
Mumble’s, I’m anxious to hear about your Sierra coils and points adventure! I hear the Sierra coil laminates don’t line up good with the flywheel magnets. Better save the old laminates!
October 4, 2016 at 1:26 am #45139Thanks Jerry I will look for it there. I love my old Van.

October 4, 2016 at 2:33 am #45144Dougs Outboards; I will check again on the oiler wicks, but the last time I had my hands on some Sierra points they did not have the wicks with the points. That’s interesting that you are getting them! I just got 6 after-market tuneup kits (turned out to be Sierra) and returned them the other day from my parts supplier. They did not have wicks with them. It would not be fair to compare unless I buy actual Sierra part number. I will let you know what I find.
I think we all agree that our "Classic" engines all need their wicks replaced (if it hasn’t been done) by now.Dan in TN

Not sure why there would be some wicks in some seirra points kits and not in others, that’s weird, especially if they are the same 18-5156 part number, but I believe you. Wish I had a spare new set in my possesion now, I could send you a pic of it including the wick. Mine are coming out of NW WA State,
Just a month ago, I serviced an older Johnson 25hp, ordered a couple kits and both had wicks, so another wick in my stash.
In fact about 4 months ago I sent 4-5 wicks to another member who was having trouble finding just the wick, which I assume they do not sell separately.
On my own motors, if the wick is still structurally sound, I simply add a drop or two of motor oil and re-lubricate every year, does good for me.
I think I am gonna go to OEM points tho. But it’s just so easy with seirra, order them in the am from NAPA or Cost Less Auto, and they are there for me in the afternoon, can’t beat that unless someone has them in stock already.
October 4, 2016 at 4:10 pm #45167I got a ’64 40 hp Evinrude a couple of years ago, it had a new set of points in it. The motor just would not idle smoothly. Checking the points, I found that the rivet that holds the insulated point in place was loose on both sets. A quick tap with a center punch fixed the idling problem.

October 4, 2016 at 8:36 pm #45190Well I put it to rest today as most of you have already figured out. Sierra does send oiler wicks with their points sets now! Like Mumbles points out in another post the wicks come with a cap of grease. My supplier just let me look at a set so I didn’t have to buy them. I am glad after looking at the mess Mumbles had to put up with. I put my first Sierra points in when I was 15 yrs. old. I’m 63 now and can’t tell any difference in their quality. Their points have never aligned properly to me. It is just a quality thing to me. Now I don’t remember the coil thing being this bad. Hopefully the coils will get better! If our other supply dries up someday that may be all we are stuck with?
