I cleaned the carb to an Evinrude Zephyr 4404 and upon testing it out again, I found that the little plunger assembly is not pumping into the primer tank. I took it apart and found the rubber to be hardened and shrunk, not properly contacting the sides of the pump to create suction or pressure. I know that the pump is getting gas into it, but not pumping any gas out. Is there anywhere I can find new rubber parts for the primer pump?

Ken Hall might have the primer cups. I know he has waterpump impellers for the Zephyr’s.

A few years ago I posted a fix for this very problem using readily available pieces similar to brake cylinder cups.  I do remember posting part numbers and photos of the installation process as I had to shorten the plunger shaft a bit to accept the new piece.

I should still have the photos but they will be hiding  somewhere amongst the 8K+ pics I have stored in my PC. Doing a Google search might find the post.

That might be the post Mumbles is talking about.  Mumbles has GREAT pictures;  it’s always a great day when I can find the ones I remember him posting a while back…….

Mumbles, I thank you! Edwin is my grandson and also a Jr. member thanks to grandaddy’s gift of a membership. As a follow-up, Edwin sent me the link to your post and I ordered the cups. This past weekend the family was here for graduation and Edwin and I did the machine work and installed the cup. The cup did make a difference but not completely. As it turns out, there is an additional “cup’ that acts like a check valve, and we tried the installation of one of the new cups and now have a very good primer! My son in law texted me yesterday after they arrived home and said Edwin made a beeline to his little workshop, and this morning Edwin sent me a video, —-it is now running!

Everyone on this website responds kindly and I appreciate that. You never know who you are responding to, and in this case, it is a 14 year old youngster who has fallen in love with the hobby. The encouragement and help provided by the respondents boosts the ambition and gives us new ideas to try. I have a 1935 Sport Four that is a sweet runner, but if the primer doesn’t work, it is a bear to start. I now have a possible solution provided I can find the proper size cup.
