I picked up a really ugly FD-10 in the fall. I started to tear the thing down and when I pulled the flywheel I was surprised to find this:

I was expecting the usual cracked coils, but everything here looks brand new. There is a little pitting on the points, but my guess is that it wasn’t run much since the rebuild. Any idea when this might have been done based on the coils? The coils and points have a small ‘m’ on them.

Also, this is my first FD-10…any common items that need replacing beyond the water pump?

      Thanks!

I love it when that happens! People throw all kinds of new parts and money into a motor and it still doesn’t run right. After they give up and walk away from it, I find it’s nothing more than that problematic lower seal these motors have on the crankshaft!

I wonder if those are the 1960 Belgium made coils?

We picked up a Lund S-14 DLX a month ago, and it came with a 1974 Evinrude 15 and a 1960 Johnson 10 hp. The Johnson was thrown in with the deal, as the owner claimed he put over $100 in parts and still couldn’t get it to run. When we pulled the flywheel off, it had brand new coils, but the cam was upside down. Other than missing the rear cowl latch, (found one on e-bay) it is a really clean motor. 😀 We may decide to keep this one. The 15 runs great, and we will be selling it in the spring. Kevin needs to turn some of these into tuition this year!

If you’re missing the wick and/or the clip and don’t have any, let me know and I can send them to you.

Those coils are newer than the 1960 Belgium ones on Art’s beautiful display.
20mercman: keep the nice 10hp, let the 74 15hp sail on down the road!

                      HAPPY NEW YEAR!

You forgot the cost of the new boots and wires, Brent.

The oiler is there, it is just perfectly hidden in the photo. Thanks for the offer, Steve. But what I am missing is the high speed knob. $24 at Marine Engine…ouch! I am also in need of the rubber seal that goes around the control plate. And the throttle plate is pretty faded, if anyone has a source for those.

It looks to me like there are only three nuts holding the power head on. Am I right about that, or have I missed some? And what tool do you use to reach them?

                      Thanks.

nymarine.ca has the rubber that goes around the face plate…navigate to parts>grommets. Most of the ones I have are broken/cracked. I can send you one of those high speed knobs though. email me at sdpiazza@aol.com with your info.

If I remember correctly, for the power head there are 5 screws in the back and those 3 nuts. I find they are easiest to get to by removing the 2 halves of the lower pan and the side levers.
