bought this motor tonight. it is a manual start but has an electric flywheel. as soon as I saw it, I looked for a starter, etc but no such luck. still a beautiful motor. one of the nicest original 1958 holiday bronze examples I’ve seen. tried like crazy to find something wrong cosmetically with this motor and the chipped medallion is the only thing I could find. i’ll get pics of under the cowl soon. looks like the carb has screw holes in it for the electric choke.

has anyone else ever run into or heard of manual starts equipped with a cogged flywheel?

It seems to be a 50/50 chance an eighteen will have either a ring gear or an inertia ring on it but I think all of my ’57 and older Evinrude rope starts came with an inertia ring. I always smile when I see a ring gear on a manual start motor as half of the conversion job to electric start is already done. This ’63 Johnson literature says the motors all come with a ring gear.

Nice ’58 FD you have there but where’s the speed indicator band? ☺

see mumbles!? I knew one of you guys would find something missing or damaged or something. looks like it’s missing. the bakelite grip has a crack in it to like most of them will. hmm….i’ll have to find one.

thanks for the info on the ring gear too!

I had a FD11 that had the flywhwel nut put on by an impact wrench. That ruins the flywheel and the magneto cam. Had to replace it and the toothed one was easier to find.

If you want a starter and wiring harness and the whole shabango, I have it 🙂

Thanks for the offer zeph but I’ll bet the harness alone would cost more than I paid for this motor. When tuned well, these ones are easy starters anyway. For now this one’s still small enough to rope over by hand, but maybe in 10 years….. 😀

Zephyr – I may be interested in the starter and harness. PM me with details if you would be so kind. Thanks

I have a few of those ring gears in my stash. Cheaper than ME..
