Green Quicksilver Dual Handle Shift Box and early 60s OMC Motor?

Hello – I have a friend that has a 50s vintage feathercraft boat with a green Mercury Quicksilver dual handle shift box (similar to the attached photo) and cables that hooked up to a mid 50s Mercury 40 HP motor that isn’t running at the moment. I have some OMC motor options I can let him use – my question is, is it possible to swap out the ends on the cables and re-use his shift box or do we need to swap out the shift box with an OMC one as well? I haven’t seen his cables up close so I don’t know what I’m working with. Any advice appreciated.
