SIERRA kit so there is no lube. I will put a dab of bearing grease on it is that will do the job.
September 21, 2020 at 8:44 pm #217019Also the shaft going down toward the prop will just pull straight out. Should it do that? Ready to go back together but will leave it till tomorrow and hear back from you guys. Really appreciate the help.

ClaudeDo you mean the driveshaft? If so, yes, it will pull right out of the gearcase, this is normal. The only thing that holds the driveshaft down into the gearcase is the impeller key that can not be pulled up through the impeller housing. Again, make sure you have the impeller blades oriented properly. It is hard to describe how the blades should be oriented with the written word. The impeller rotates counter clockwise when looking at it from the bottom side of the impeller housing…. Be sure to change the gear lube on this engine frequently, temperatures get high in this gearcase.
September 22, 2020 at 3:11 pm #217091Thanks to all. Now I need to rig up a fuel tank and see if she runs. Flywheer spins the prop in forward and all feels normal. I could pull an old white Mercury apart in my sleet but never owned an evinrude/johnson. so again thanks to all.

September 22, 2020 at 6:38 pm #217117Next time you do an impeller use vasoline perto jelly. It is inert & will not attack the rubber in the impeller. Never put grease on the top of the driveshaft, only the sides. It will create downward pressure on the driveshaft.
Don,
Why no grove for an o-ring on the splines, Thought they had that one down!!September 22, 2020 at 6:39 pm #217118Well, your 6hp is a little similar to a Merc because its shift rod rotates to shift, instead of being pulled up and down. No shift rod connector like Mercs also….

Someone at OMC had a “better idea”. Instead of the conventional oring on top of the driveshaft to seal the splines, the lower seal housing has two seals. The larger diameter seal is for the crankcase, the smaller diameter seal is to seal the driveshaft splines. This engine series is known for premature spline rusting resulting in seized crank/driveshaft splines. This situation did not get much better with the “two seal” method. I can only “guess” that the crank materials are subject to premature rust.
So, I recommend that the gearcase be removed once a year on salt water engines to clean and relube the splines.
Jeff- Please check your PMs, thanks Don -
