I picked up this old Johnson motor – probably late 1930’s and have not been able to find the model number and serial number.
Thought it to be a 2.5hp when I got it. It has a recoil, rear mounted tank and same lower unit and carburetor as my 5hp LT39.
But, the block is similar to a 4.2hp DT38 I used to have. I identified the DT38 by finding the model number and serial number
on the cast cover – not on the block. I am wondering if this motor might be a LT38 4.2hp with a recoil. But there must be a
model number and serial number on it somewhere, which I have not, to this point, been able to find. Any help in identifying
this motor would be appreciated.January 4, 2017 at 8:36 pm #50319Anonymous

Your photo of LT 37 looks right – except -add a recoil on the top.January 5, 2017 at 11:26 am #50356.
strange ! 😕
I thought that the recoil came with the model LT-39 and was called a AT-39
it was a choice you could make between the two models.
.January 5, 2017 at 11:48 am #50357That would make it the model AT10.

quote Jerry Ahrens:That would make it the model AT10.for your info
AT-10 is the same as the AT-39
😎
.January 6, 2017 at 12:46 am #50406Not an AT10 – I’ve had one. The AT10 is a 5hp with a common 5hp block. This motor has a different power head – similar to the power head on a DT38 which I used to own. This power block has no head bolts as does the 5hp block used for so many years. That’s why I suspect this motor is a 4.2 hp. I have an old Johnson service manual that has a rear photo of a LT38 but with the addition of a recoil, and thought this motor might be that. But I have not been able to find a model number and serial number on it anywhere. Had the same problem with the DT38, but found the model# and serial number on the cast cover. I’m new to old outboards and thought perhaps someone with more knowledge than me (wouldn’t take much) might know where that model number and serial number might be found. Sure appreciate all the responses and hope we can get this pinned down.
