We have an old Johnson outboard motor. I have been trying to find information in it but cannot. The model # is PD-17 and the serial # is 249989. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
February 2, 2020 at 12:51 pm #193787According to this Serial Number Chart, your 249989 number
makes your Johnson a 1936.
Regarding the Model PD-17, I’m guessing your not deciphering
that correctly. You don’t say how big a motor you have,
but there were PO model Johnsons, 22 horse power
in 1937.
Photos would tell the story.Prepare to be boarded!

The motor does not say what hp it is anywhere. I’ll send a pic.

February 2, 2020 at 2:08 pm #193796That clearly is a RD-17, 1955 25hp. The “tail” on the R is not clearly stamped.
Likewise, look closely and there is a “1” preceding the serial number. True serial number is 1,249,989.

Thank you to everyone for their help! I also came up with a 1955 25 HP but I didn’t want to assume anything! Have a wonderful day!
February 3, 2020 at 2:14 am #193816There was a service bulletin on this – Make sure the quarter inch hole in the lower front motor cover under the carburetor has been opened up to 2 inches. If it has a rubber elbow on the air silencer intake, it should be discarded.
February 3, 2020 at 8:39 am #193821February 3, 2020 at 9:32 am #193825Further the intake silencer originally contained a perforated tube wrapped with fiberglass. That should also be removed.

That almost sounds familiar. What’s the issue with it?
All I know is that mine ran good last summer!Prepare to be boarded!
