Hello just purchased a Keikeffer mercury super 10 today at a automotive swap meet. I would like some basic info on this engine. I am more a OMC guy but I do have some Mercury’s in my collection. This engine says on the side Keikeffer mercury super 10. It does not have a handle on the top of the recoil nor does it have any bolt holes where one would bolt. Did some of these engines come with out it ? Also says model KG – 7 and the serial number is worn off in center but it starts with 47 missing some numbers and ends with a 7. Motor is in nice shape and pulls over but some one painted the leg and top tank and lower band black. Also missing choke knob and the prop is dinged up slightly. From my description can anyone tell me the year of engine? Also how do you make the boat go in reverse as the engine does not seem to spin around 360 degrees. Are water pump impellers and parts to make it run again easily available ? Does it have a neutral or only direct drive? Finally what are the differences and corresponding years of the other Mercury 10 horses of this era ( hurricanes, cruisers ect. ) Thanks Bill,
May 4, 2019 at 11:56 pm #174829should be a KF7 1950. about he time they added the handle. it is direct drive no reverse. parts are fairly easy to find . the main difference is the KG7 and up had 8 reeds as the earlier ones had 4 reeds. thus the difference in HP. join johns old merc site we do only mercs over there. 1 914 310 7086. Serial number started with 47 then missing digits and ended with a 7. Would the serial number be any where else on motor ? Also how did you back up the boat with direct drive? Motor does not appear to be able to turn 360 or does it?
May 5, 2019 at 10:45 pm #174853The serial number should also be stamped on the block at the lower edge, just above the tower housing, usually on the right side looking forward. Gas tanks can be changed which may also change attached serial number plate.

No reverse, use a paddle to back up.

May 6, 2019 at 12:39 pm #174891Hello,
If I understand correctly, your plate does state that it is a KG-7, and your serial number begins with “47”. This would “fit” into a 1951 model KG-7. The very first KG-7 was said to be serial number 402543 produced as a 1950 model. If you should like to speak, please feel free to call @ (770) 597-5992.Regards,
JoeMay 6, 2019 at 6:14 pm #174903The KG-7 Hurricane, if that’s what it really is, puts out more actual HP than the KF-7 from the year before. Hurricanes are sought-after for running on hydroplanes. Hopefully it’s a real KG-7 and not a KF-7 that somebody swapped parts on. If it’s a KG-7, – when you open up the throttle, HANG ON!….it will put out more like 16-18 actual HP, depending on the size of the boat which determines how many RPMs it can rev up. Mercury’s rating was “10+” .
