I need to change the impeller on a Mercury KG4. After looking at the parts list, it looks like it’s just forward of the prop and not too difficult to replace. Is there anything special I need to know other than the cover has to be turned clockwise to be removed? Also, where is the best place to purchase the impeller?
Thanks,
JimAugust 8, 2016 at 11:44 pm #41790I found a NOS impeller on eBay awhile back. Its a pretty easy process as long as the cover comes off. May need to use some heat. The job is much easier using the correct Mercury tool. I tried a spanner type wrench on mine, but couldn’t get enough leverage on it. Good luck…
August 9, 2016 at 12:35 am #41796It was several years ago now, but pretty sure it was Jeff Register who told me to use a short section of pvc pipe ( shaved down on the outside a bit). Clock the impeller into the pipe with some Vaseline and then use the pipe as a guide to get the impeller started into the pump housing. Worked well !
August 9, 2016 at 2:38 pm #41834You may have good luck getting a NOS impeller at Seaway Marine. They bought all of mercury’s old shelf stock years ago. I got 2 impellers from them for my KF5 Super 5 last year. If you want to go to the expense of buying a pump housing tool, you can get one from johnmcintosh.com for about $35.00.

August 11, 2016 at 6:31 pm #41910Big Rich on here sells replacement impellers for that motor also. He is often on the classified section, also Brian Wilcox makes or rebuilds them also. I would prefer a rebuilt one or an aftermarket vs. a NOS one as the last NOS one I had, the blades broke off right away. Time is time…..

August 12, 2016 at 7:07 pm #41964My last KG7 impeller came from Old Mercs.Com. Made from urthane of some kind & has worked on the kf5,KE7,KF7 & KG7Been out of touch lately so check my sourses.
August 14, 2016 at 3:20 am #42052I replaced the impeller yesterday, and the motor is pumping water. Apparently the previous owner had the cover off, because it was loose. I made a tool out of a crescent wrench and roll pins. JW in Dixie has posted pictures in the past, and I used his design….Thanks, JW
Next impeller replacement will be on a KF7……hopefully it will be similar.
