      As far as cutting down the center pole, you will need to cut down both sides. This will allow the coil to slide on without interference. The John Deere coil is large enough and needs to slide in with at least 1/4″ of the center lamination sticking out. This helps to keep the flywheel magnets from hitting the coil.

        jtr , using a Scott armature … that sir is a good bit of information to know. Thanks.  Is the Scott armature 1/2″  ?  .. the Pony Motor coil is 1/2″ square if I recall

          It is more like 0.450″. I ground the rivets off the center pole and removed the coil keeper for clearance. Then I epoxied the coil in place. Hope it holds.

            When I did the pony coil conversion…I remember needing to remove one or two laminations to allow the coil to slide on…the laminations are too thick.  Be sure to remove the top laminations (if needed) to allow the coil to sit lower for clearance.

              Here are some pics of the conversion that I did over ten years ago with great success.  The pics were clipped by Tubs before our original website crashed and all posts were lost.  I’m glad he did that…Thank you
