Recently purchased a Lauson T-653 R, SN 8 654. Haven’t tore into it yet but, know that it does not have spark. I am looking for typical information e.g. manual, parts list and diagram drawing. Also, knowing that Lauson replacement coils are not available, I would also appreciate any information concerning ignition coil replacement alternatives.
Thanks, Gary Sandberg, Central FL
January 30, 2026 at 10:30 am #304099Hi Gary, this topic and need for Lauson information has come up here in the past. You have one of the more rare Lauson twins, the full F=N=R gear shift model. Someone here has a link to the manuals for that motor, hopefully they will chime in. As for the ignition. It seems that many (most) of these air-cooled Lausons are found with bad coils. I know that a workable substitute is the John Deere Pony Motor coil. A member here had successfully substituted that coil. The original style coils are available buy $$$, look for Maytag model 72 Twin Eissemann coils on e-bay.
Is your motor complete? Are the lower cowl shrouds present? these covers, often missing are critical to proper air flow and motor cooling.
The F=N= R transmission on that motor is a rather complicated assembly, as is all the linkage to carb and shift lever. All easily gotten out of wack. proceed with caution and have a manual at hand.

February 1, 2026 at 4:26 am #304180Funny but I just closed up a T653R. I had a lot of problems with this magneto. Used a John Deere pony motor coil ($67). Brillman sells a Maytag coil for $175, Ebay sells them for $125-150. The Deere coil requires the laminates be 7/16″. It has a nice hot spark, but everything needs to be right. The points had a loose point on the movable arm. This is corrected by peening the point. Also, make sure one primary lead goes to a good clean ground. All the connectors must be in good condition too as I had problems with these. Brillman has a condenser that works well with these. Their part #B4012-005, for the IHC magneto H1.
Hope this helps.

But just for info some details please… side to side was cut evenly I assume. How about top and bottom, this affects the vertical position of the coil within the mag plate and clearance to the flywheel. Did you cut the top ? the bottom ? or even?

February 2, 2026 at 8:46 pm #304245I used a lamination from a scott-atwater coil. You still have to do some filing to get the coil as far back as possible. If using the old laminations remove the top ones to get the new coil as low as possible.
