At the end of the day, after I got it back together, I wanted to put this little Elgin lower unit in
a bucket of water to see if the sliding vane water pump is going to pump.
It’s a 7/16″ diameter driveshaft, but for what ever reason, my 1/2″ drill chuck won’t
clamp down on it. The driveshaft turns relatively easy by hand, so that’s not a problem.
No socket will engage the splines either.
Anyone have any good “hacks” for spinning driveshaft with a drill?

I don’t want to pound anything over the end of the driveshaft, such a piece
of wood with a hole in it, for fear of damaging the “non metalic” sliding
      vane in the water pump.

I don’t believe I have a good way to machine an internal spline in round stock
to make an adapter…… nor a bad way that I can think of right off!

I’ve used a universal (gator grip) type socket.

slide a piece of hose on DS then a bolt with head cut off into the hose then drill, if needed use hose clamps.

That’s a much cheaper hack than mine!

Thanks, both good ideas. I’ve never seen the Gator Grip, but I have
odds and ends of hose and clamps, so will probably try that. It only
has to work for about 20 seconds if all goes well.
