At the end of the day, after I got it back together, I wanted to put this little Elgin lower unit in
a bucket of water to see if the sliding vane water pump is going to pump.
It’s a 7/16″ diameter driveshaft, but for what ever reason, my 1/2″ drill chuck won’t
clamp down on it. The driveshaft turns relatively easy by hand, so that’s not a problem.
No socket will engage the splines either.
Anyone have any good “hacks” for spinning driveshaft with a drill?I don’t want to pound anything over the end of the driveshaft, such a piece
of wood with a hole in it, for fear of damaging the “non metalic” sliding
vane in the water pump.I don’t believe I have a good way to machine an internal spline in round stock
to make an adapter…… nor a bad way that I can think of right off!Prepare to be boarded!

That’s a much cheaper hack than mine!

odds and ends of hose and clamps, so will probably try that. It only
has to work for about 20 seconds if all goes well.Prepare to be boarded!
