I guess I should get a Manuel so I know how to properly go about doing some things, like changing the oil in the gear case. Along with this 1960 40hp Evinrude Lark, I have a 1956 30hp Evinrude Big Twin Electric, and a 1960 18hp Evinrude Fastwin. Is there a book that covers all three, or do you have to get separate books?

The procedure for changing gear oil is the same on all three of your motors. The drain/fill screw-plug is at the rear of the gearcase under the very bottom of it for the 30 and 40 and, if I remember right, at an angle off to one side on the 18. I recommend getting a gear oil hand pump and buying gearoil in quart bottles, as the pump will screw onto the bottle. Buy marine gear oil, as regular automotive gearoil does not have an additive to combine with any water that may leak in and keep on lubricating. You can find videos about changing gearoil on youtube. Below is a link to a gearoil pump, You pump it in the drain until it comes out where you removed the vent screw. Near the bottom of the gearcase is a small Phillips-head screw that goes in horizontally from one side – DO NOT TAKE THIS SCREW OUT! – It has a pin on the end that is part of the shift linkage and you may have to disassemble the gearcsae to get that screw back in properly.
There are after market repair manuals that cover several Johnson/Evinrude years published by Seloc and Clymer. They go into good detail on some things and skimp on others, but usually help pretty well for basic maintenance.

Below is a link to a manual for 1958-1972. The 1958 standard 35 HP will be nearly identical to your 1956 30 HP.

Here is a link to gear oil pumps. Any pump with the 3/8″ threaded fitting to screw into the gearcase drain will work:

I just picked up a book/manuel titled, “Johnson/Evinrude Outboards, 1-2 Cylinders, 1956-1970” by Seloc. Hopefully this will help me do a few things on my own. At least the simple things, like changing the gear case oil.

Just t follow -up on what ouboardnut2 said… a little trick that makes the gear lube change a little neater. Screw the filler pump fitting into the drain hole.. pump till lube comes out of the vent hole… then BEFORE unscrewing the filler, install the vent plug and tighten. This minimizes the loss of lube while you quickly switch from filler fitting to the plug.

A small detail , but it helps
