I have a Martin 75 with the "neutral shift". I "believe" I read somewhere
that one is to use 40 wt Non-Detergent motor oil in the gear case,
but can’t find that information again.
Does anyone concur? I can’t imagine 40 wt oil is going to stay
in the gear case in a 60 + year old motor very long.
Has anyone substituted something heavier without affecting
the operation of the neutral shift? Also, I have an older Martin 75 without the neutral shift.
What gear lube do those use? Thanks!

August 13, 2016 at 3:55 pm #42025The sticker on the Martin says "See Owner’s Manual" for
gear lube information. Anyone have a manual for
the Martin CB and CC 75’s?
I wanted to test run it this morning, so I found some 30 non detergent
motor oil and mixed it with some marine gear lube to thicken it.
The neutral shift seem to work real nice, but would still like to know
what other people are using in theirs.Prepare to be boarded!
August 13, 2016 at 4:12 pm #42027Have you tried these guys? They have everything Martin, and are great at answering questions about all Martin models. Very helpful bunch of guys.

thought I’d give you guys first crack with the Martin questions 🙂Prepare to be boarded!
August 13, 2016 at 10:50 pm #42038Not saying that it inline with the original factory recommendation (which I can’t find in my manual), but I use Lubriplate 105 on my Martin 75TS. The seals are not great, and I prefer sticking with the grease until I decide to reseal the lower unit. Shifts and operates just fine with the Lubriplate.

August 14, 2016 at 12:31 am #42041I believe the neutral motors use 40wt ND oil as you thought, the direct drive use John Deere Corn Head grease (or other NLGI 0 grease that is compatible with water intrusion, not NLGI 2 common grease).

Does your luberplate say what it’s thickness it is? I have used Luberplate in many shift & direct drive gears without any issues including my 63 Merc 20hp & ran & shifted correctly. Remember this is only my experiences but have great performances with it without any damage. I check mine every time they go on the boat.August 14, 2016 at 2:19 am #42048Thanks all for your input and information. One look at the floor tomorrow morning
and I’ll know how the Martin’s LU seals are holding the 40 wt motor oil!
I have a Hiawatha (Gale) 5hp with the neutral shift that didn’t hold gear lube
even after new seals, so I put Lubriplate 105 in it, and the Neutral Shift didn’t
work after that. Not sure if the Martin neutral is designed similar or not.Prepare to be boarded!
August 14, 2016 at 12:33 pm #42054Yep, I can confirm the Martin 75TS will shift just fine with the 105. They are very smooth shifters and the Lubriplate doesn’t affect performance in my experience.
Jeff — Lubriplate 105 is rated NGLI 00. I use it in my Mark 20, and have not had any issues. I don’t typically use it in FGS motors unless they call for grease (like some West Bends), but a couple ’50s Mercs and the auto transmissions are an exception to the rule.
