The "Mercury Service Tools" are said to come in handy when working on the small twins
and automatic transmission models. Not being very enthused about working on them
traded the ring clamps and part of the stand/seal tool to someone who professed a
liking for them. Thought I had gotten rid of everything related to them but a block
and some odds and end crawled out of where ever they were hiding.
The ring compressor tool are made in two halves of stiff springy metal strips that have
and interlocking tab/hinge at end. Looks simple but hard to make without some sort of tooling/jig/fixture and probably heat treated as well. Perhaps an equivalent could be made up by machining solid material such as a Delrin split collar that could be fasten together to hold rings in place. The small twins strike me as something a watchmaker might enjoy but
a little too finely made for me.
On the opposite tack I have used nuts on threaded rods to force stuck pistons out
of cylinders of early K Models and also a KF7 so guiding them back together would seem
both possible and worth trying. Guides are very helpful when installing exhaust manifolds
and water line on pre Mark7 11 cu in twins.
Point of all this is don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Sometimes the solution to a
difficult problem is very simple and worth making even for a one off job. Necessity is
the mother of invention says it all.

Note: nut on threaded rod give huge mechanical advantage…enough to snap connecting rods
I would not believe that possible except that I did it on recent KD4 tear down…twice!!! Both rods No harm done as parts were rusted solid…scrap metal before I started.

Louis, I know what you mean by "finely made"……. that’s
why I haven’t started on my four cylinder Zephyr’s yet!
The thought of those four little pistons and rings give
me the willies. I’ll see if I have any suitable material
in the scrap bin and try making a ring compressor for
the Mk 5 / 6’s. I left an old piston sitting out to remind me.
Just got done brazing the the two seal grooves on the
long drive shaft. Still have to turn them down. Will see soon
if it was worth the effort.
I feel your pain on "frozen" engines 🙂
        Thanks!

I cut a 1/2" pvc pipe about 1/2" long, then cut into 4 equal pieces. I used the outside of the piece of pipe over the rings in 4 places. The rings are then compressed on both pistons using zip ties. This frees up both hands to install the pistons. They go right on & you hear click click click & your done. The mark 5 has very little room for my fat fingers. Just cut the zip tie when completed.

Jeff, I tried your trick last year on my MK6, but had
a hard time getting everything, and keeping everything
in place. I’m going to try to make something like the
factory tool, but I still trying to envision how I’m going
            to make the tool hinge.

the hinge is a slot and tab setup. one half has the slot the other has the tab.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Tubs, I tried a hose clamp last year but it wasn’t
co-operating either! Worst problem with those
skinny little rings on the Mark 5 or 6’s is being
able to see if the end gap is staying on the
                  itty bitty locator pins.

Here are a few photos of the tool. Hope this helps.

Thanks Nitramag! That hinge affair is more
simple than I imagined……. making it might
                        be another thing though!
I expect someone will be selling them on Ebay
using your photo for a pattern soon……. not me though!
The tool looks to be about 3/4" wide or so, but
guess it just needs to cover the three rings and
                        not much more.
