      No problem Buccaneer. It’s actually 1/2" wide. It just covers the rings.

        Thanks Nitramag. Maybe I’ll try turning down
        a piece of round stock the same size as the
        piston and use if for a jig to bend the strap
        steel.

            Good luck with that seeing where the ring ends are. =broken rings

              Jeff, my idea was to have a gap where the handles
              are to be able to see the ring gaps. Surely Mercury
              wouldn’t have designed a tool that breaks rings?

                you just lube them put them close squeeze the handle lightly move the tool back and forth till the rings set in place works easy. you will feel them set in. done many. in my day.
