Seems this motor only runs when the choke is on or partially on. I would like to clean the carb as this motor has been sitting a long time. In order to get the carb off, does the power head need to be pulled? I don’t see how to get the carb off any other way. Am I wrong?
Thank you for your help.

August 21, 2022 at 1:44 pm #264641The back side of the carb mounting flange is relieved a bit, to allow the carb to be tilted/pivited out. To get the choke out of the way, hold the choke arm forward and push in on the choke knob. It is spring loaded. While pushing in, turn the knob 90 degrees and then pull it out of the lower cowl. Even with all this, I didn’t say it is easy….but yes, it CAN be done without removing the power head. It does sound like that’s what you need. Although, if you pull the idle tube out of it (Under the diagonal facing plug on the top side of the carb) you might be able to just clean out that tube and try it again.

August 21, 2022 at 7:54 pm #264676Dave: do you have a link or part number for that pump? Is that my issue or does the carb just need cleaning?
August 22, 2022 at 7:23 am #264710carb needs cleaning I just added the pump while you are there. it is from a latter small merc up to 20 hp.

August 22, 2022 at 8:50 pm #264757No Bill, it didn’t. I took the power head off, threw the carb in the sonic cleaner and now it runs fine. On to the next motor!
August 23, 2022 at 6:08 am #264770Just for the record, those carbs really will come off without removing the power head.
