I want to replace the bottom crank seal. How do I safely remove the cap holding the seal ? The service manual don’t mention it.

I heat it with mapp gas for a few seconds and then use water pump pliers to twist it off.

            Richard,
I have heard the term used before but I don’t know what water pump pliers are. May I ask what they look like? Channel lock maybe?
            Thanks,
            Jeff

What seal number do you use as a replacement? Does 26-21818 cross to another seal number?

Yes, channel locks. There is a story behind my use of the term- Growing up my Dad always used that term because the only time he used Channel Locks ( a brand name I think) was when a hose broke on the water pump of his old cars. They were great at twisting off the old hose. He went through a whole bunch of junkers in his life time. He use to choose state and local roads as his routes to work so he could always roll into a service station. He hated the Interstate Highways because you would have to be towed off at a high towing fee price. Duct tape was handy for breakdowns.
